“Race Against Resistance: The Life and Death Struggle to Save Antibiotics,” presented by the AMR Action Fund and funded by Pfizer, Shionogi, MSD, debuted on September 5, drawing significant attention to the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance.
The documentary-style film, which was produced by BBC StoryWorks, takes viewers around the world and into the lives of those affected by drug-resistant infections, as well as into the laboratories of the scientists working to develop new, life-saving therapies. Shot across three continents and featuring leading clinicians and scientists on the frontlines of the AMR crisis, the film explores several key topics, including the policy failures and market challenges that have allowed superbugs to flourish in recent decades.
“As this film makes painfully clear, antimicrobial resistance is killing millions of people every year and could undermine the very foundations of modern medicine. By putting human faces on the amorphous threat of AMR, we hope this film serves as a wake-up call to policymakers around the world,” said John Alter, head of external affairs at the AMR Action Fund. “We can no longer afford to drag our feet on addressing AMR. We need our leaders to act boldly and address the R&D gaps that have allowed superbugs to gain the upper hand on patients and clinicians around the world,” said John Alter, head of external affairs at the AMR Action Fund.”
